Migraine Headaches

The Magnesium Solution for Migraine Headaches: How to Use Magnesium to Prevent and Relieve Migraine & Cluster Headaches Naturally

Published by Square One Publishers, New York: 2004; 78 pages.

Magnesium is a key element in maintaining healthy body functioning and one of the few natural substances that has been studied extensively in scientific studies. From professional and personal experience, Dr. Cohen has learned how important magnesium can be for preventing and treating vascular disorders, and has published on magnesium in the Annals of Pharmacotherapy (Feb. 2002). Migraine and cluster headaches are vascular disorders that magnesium can help. Twenty-five million American adults and children suffer from migraines. Dr. Cohen was one of them. His migraines were infrequent, but severe enough to learn that migraines are incapacitating, a quantum beyond tension headaches. Scientific evidence shows that magnesium can help prevent and treat migraine and cluster headaches for millions of people. His own migraines disappeared (except for an occasional painless, visual aura) since he began taking magnesium. Magnesium is far safer, cheaper, and often more effective than many expensive, side-effect prone drugs that doctors readily prescribe to migraine sufferers. Diagnosing magnesium deficiencies is difficult, and taking effective amounts of magnesium often causes diarrhea. Fortunately, there are ways to identify the 75% of people in Western societies who are magnesium deficient and to use therapeutic amounts of magnesium without problems. Dr. Cohen explains all of this and more in his factually-based book on magnesium for you and your doctor.

High Blood Pressure

The Magnesium Solution for High Blood Pressure:How to Use Magnesium to Help Prevent and Relieve Hyptertension Naturally

Published by Square One Publishers, New York: 2004; 83 pages.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is more dangerous than high cholesterol. Considering that 90% of us develop high blood pressure in our lifetime, and that medication treatment does not entirely reduce the extra risk that hypertension causes for heart attacks and strokes, magnesium is something you should learn about now. Magnesium is something that most people's bodies need and can be essential in helping to prevent hypertension before it begins. High blood pressure is one of the major vascular disorders that can be helped by magnesium. Magnesium is a key element in maintaining healthy body functioning and one of the few natural substances that has been studied extensively in scientifically studies. Most mainstream doctors know little about magnesium and never think about replacing it--even when giving patients antihypertensive drugs that wash magnesium from their bodies. Fortunately, there are ways to identify the 75% of people in Western societies who are magnesium deficient and to use therapeutic amounts of magnesium without problems. If magnesium were properly included in the mainstream medical approach to hypertension, it would save people hundreds and health-care systems millions of dollars a year. This is an essential how-to book on magnesium for you and your doctor.

Cholesterol

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT STATIN DRUGS AND THEIR NATURAL ALTERNATIVES: The Precision Method For Reducing Cholesterol and C-Reactive Protein Safely

Published by Square One Publishers, New York: 2005; 199 pages.

Dr. Cohen's book is unique in providing you with comprehensive information on reducing cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors with statin drugs -- Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, Mevacor, Lescol, Crestor -- as safely as possible. If you prefer non-drug methods, What You Must Know About Statin Drugs and Their Natural Alternatives offers in-depth information on effective natural supplements and on how to identify your ideal heart-healthy diet. If you aren't sure whether you need treatment, the book can help you determine if you need treatment and whether statin medications or if natural methods are preferable. If you need but cannot afford statin therapy, Chapter 11 explains how you can cut statin costs by 50 percent or more.

For statin users, Dr. Cohen dispenses information that most doctors and patients have never seen. Statin drugs are the top-selling drug group in America, and Dr. Cohen emphasizes a "precision-prescribing" method of matching statin drugs and doses for each person. In contrast to drug-company studies that are swaying doctors to use the strongest doses of the strongest statins, Dr. Cohen explains who needs aggressive treatment and who doesn't (most people), and he provides little-known information about safer, proven-effective statin doses that are even lower than those currently marketed. Unlike other books, Dr. Cohen provides the full range of effective statin doses that work, so that you and your doctor can individualize treatment to your specific needs and goals. By doing so, the risks of statin side effects can be minimized. If you are experiencing side effects on your current statin, Dr. Cohen explains how to identify and halt them quickly. The information in Dr. Cohen's book is scientifically sound, proven by studies and by the experiences of doctors.

Drug Reactions

Over Dose: The Case Against the Drug Companies

Published by Tarcher-Putnam, New York: 2004; 320 pages.

Reviews of Over Dose

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "Replete with information supported by recognized and reliable sources, this exposé and health guide should be read by anyone taking prescription medication.... Clear, easy narrative ... an invaluable resource for doctors and patients alike."

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION: "Over Dose adds to the growing chorus of criticism and is very much in league with the drug industry's harshest detractors. But the book is much more besides. Jay Cohen, MD, long a thorn in the industry's side, has written a highly readable, user-friendly, and well-researched account of a serious clinical issue plaguing the everyday practice of medicine. This popularly-written book is well worth reading and is very likely to provoke modifications in the prescription practices of many physicians who pick it up."

BOOKLIST: "A thorough, solidly based book that deserves to be widely read by medical professionals and the lay public."

MENSA BULLETIN: "If you're one of the 46 percent of Americans on a drug regimen, this book could save your life, so do yourself a favor and get a copy."

KIRKUS REVIEWS: "A call for action and a plan for it as well. A well-planned and documented expose' of how pharmaceutical companies market drug information and how their one-size-fits-all dosage recommendations harm patients. Though not intended as a comprehensive reference, Over Dose is a source of useful drug information, much of it tabulated at chapter ends for easy consultation."

LOS ANGELES TIMES: "The central message of Over Dose is that standard doses of top-selling drugs are excessively strong for millions of people, triggering an epidemic of serious, yet avoidable side effects. Cohen believes that the only way for consumers to circumvent these problems is to become informed about lower, safer drug doses. To this end, the book includes practical advice on dozens of common prescription medications for those who are most at-risk: the elderly, women, and children."

LIBRARY JOURNAL: "Highly recommended for public and medical libraries."

FROM THE BACK COVER OF OVER DOSE

If you are among the forty-six percent of Americans who take at least one prescription drug daily, here is why you should read Dr. Jay S. Cohen's Over Dose:

Medication reactions are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, linked with more than 100,000 deaths, 1,000,000 hospitalizations, and 2,000,000 severe or permanently disabling reactions annually (JAMA 1998). And that's just the statistics from hospitals; adding adverse reactions in outpatients would make the numbers even higher.

Avoidable dose-related side effects cause millions of people to discontinue vital treatment for serious conditions such as high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, and osteoporosis.

This "side-effect epidemic" is due mainly to unnecessarily high medication doses that are developed by the drug companies and approved by the FDA.

Rather than assure that people receive only as much medication as they need, drug companies often choose doses that support marketing strategies an make prescribing easy for doctors.

More than half of our drugs, after being deemed "safe" by the FDA, are subsequently found to have previously unrecognized, medically serious side effects, most of which are dose-related.

For one in five drugs, dosages are ultimately lowered years after FDA approval after millions of people have received the higher doses.

Doses are not adequately tailored for the differing needs of women and the elderly. Nor for the "medication-sensitive:" the millions of people who are sensitive to prescription drugs and, often, alcohol or coffee or other chemicals. These groups are at the greatest risk of serious adverse drug reactions.

Most side effects are avoidable. Side effects can be prevented by matching medication doses to the size, age, medical condition, and medication history of each person.

Many people do well -- and avoid side effects -- by using with Dr. Cohen's "Start Low, Go Slow" approach. By starting low and increasing the dosage gradually, you get the exact amount of medication you need while avoiding excessive dosing. (The Start Low, Go Slow approach is applicable to the majority of medical situations, but not all. Ask your doctor.)

Over Dose shows you how to work with your doctor to take charge of your own prescription health and provides practical information and lower effective dosages based on clinical studies that your doctor can consider for some of the nation's best-selling drugs.
