Does seeing a psychiatrist mean that I am "mentally ill?"
Dr. Cohen does not consider people with anxiety, depression, or panic disorders as mentally ill. Dr. Cohen's patients are regular people. They have jobs or volunteer work or hobbies. They have family and friends. They have problems with depression or anxiety or panic, just as other people have problems with diabetes, high blood pressure, or migraines. Getting treatment for depression or anxiety is a step toward health, as is getting proper treatment for high blood pressure or diabetes.

Does Dr. Cohen provide psychotherapy?

Dr. Cohen does provide psychotherapy (talk therapy). These days, most psychiatrists do not provide therapy or counseling to their patients. Dr. Cohen was trained in the 1970s, when therapy was just as important as medications to patients' improvement. Recent studies have proven this to be the case.

Dr. Cohen says, "No medication ever made a person smarter, increased their awareness of their emotions, or improved their communication skills." Therapy can help a person achieve these goals and many more. Some of Dr. Cohen's patients already have therapists and Dr. Cohen serves as the medication expert.

Does Dr. Cohen always prescribe prescription medication?
No. In many cases, Dr. Cohen recommends natural alternatives instead of prescription drugs. In other cases, patients only need psychotherapy.

When do I pay for my visit with Dr. Cohen?
At the time of your visit with Dr. Cohen. Please bring your checkbook with you. We do not accept credit cards in the office, but you can use your credit card to pay for the visit on the web at Paypal.

What about telephone consultations?

In addition to people with anxiety and depressive disorders, Dr. Cohen assists people: 1) with severe reactions to the antibiotics Cipro and Levaquin, 2) with a rare disorder known as erythromelalgia, and 3) with questions about medications or side effects. If you are interested in a telephone consultation, please contact the office at 858-345-1760 for scheduling.

Will my insurance cover the costs of treatment with Dr. Cohen?
You should check with your insurance company about your coverage for psychiatric services. At the end of your visit, Dr. Cohen will give you a form that you can submit to your insurer. We are not set up to fill out insurance forms or deal directly with insurers.

"As the publisher of health-oriented books and newsletters, I work with many medical experts. Dr. Cohen is one of our top experts --so knowledgeable, and always looking out for the best interest of individuals rather than serving the organized-medicine machine."
